Meeting families in Yirgacheffe

Meeting families in Yirgacheffe

🔎

Our Head of Coffee Dave is taking a couple of our roasting partners to visit Ethiopia and meet Moata Raya, founder of coffee exporter Mecota Trading, who will be taking the group to visit the various farmers that he works with.

Moata has taken the group to meet a few individual family farms located in Yirgacheffe. These farms are 6 to 8 hectares and are packed with native flora. All the coffee here is grown in the shade, and varietals are a mix of 74110 and 74112.

The families that the group visited were incredibly hospitable, and insisted on providing food and coffee for everyone. Dave was excited to report that the these coffees tasted phenomenal. They have all been naturally processed and each family will apparently produce about 40 to 70 sacks per harvest.

The farmers that Mo introduced were Wako Jegso and his family of 12 children, his wife, and grandma Jegso, a woman named Aragash who has 6.5 hectares, and Niguse Jilo Dima, who’s coffee placed 36th in the Ethiopia Cup of Excellence.

Dave is eager for us to begin working with these families, and will soon be cupping the coffee samples gathered from them in order to make decisions on what we will purchase.

As the harvest is now over, the families are now picking the dried cherries that remain on the trees. These will be sold to the domestic market, though we are curious to try some ourselves…
