Our friends at Mount Sunzu in Zambia have experienced a theft of some coffee during the 2025 harvest.
Mount Sunzu store their parchment coffee in an onsite warehouse until it’s ready for milling, and at some point several sacks were thrown out into the bush, then collected during the night.
As there are no dry mills in the region, the coffee was most likely transported towards the border, smuggled into Tanzania and sold to one of the dry mills there. Mount Sunzu estimate that around 40 sacks were stolen.
Unfortunately thefts like this can be common when coffee is viewed as an increasingly valuable commodity. The Sunzu team have taken this as a learning experience however, and have since installed fencing and introduced new security checks to catch any future burglary attempts.
