Interview
What is your name?
Ndimugipfunzi Leonard
How old are you?
I am 59 years old.
How many children do you have?
I have 8 children.
How is living like in this area?
We live in poverty, you see, we get money when we harvest. That is the money we use to allow our children to study.
When did you start farming coffee?
In 1988.
Why did you start farming coffee?
I like the coffee trees, because I saw our parents getting money from the trees, build houses, get wives, everything someone needs. People can use the money gained from the coffee to buy all those things.
How big is you land?
The surface of our land is simple. We don’t have many lands, but we have perhaps 0,7 hectare.
How many coffee trees do you have?
900 trees of coffee.
Which things in life bring you joy?
Besides cultivating coffee, I also practice apiculture. I do the two jobs at the same time. I am happy to build the bee houses as it helps us to buy the essentials we need.
What do you like about coffee farming?
Together with the apiculture I am able to buy the essentials needed.
What are some of the main challenges you have in coffee farming?
The problems are vegetables to put in the land and other problems we meet when harvesting and transporting the coffee to the stations. You see, money we get from the coffee is not enough.
What are some things in life that changed since you started coffee farming?
When we harvest, things are different. Because when we harvest, we are able to pay for our daily needs. We go out, greet our friends and are able to achieve other projects like buying animals.
What are your hopes/dreams for the future?
Currently, we are getting older and older. You see, coffee, is hard to maintain. We have to tell our children to work hard for it. Perhaps tomorrow the coffee may be bought from us with much money. We hope the value of coffee will increase on the international market, so that we can increase our income and develop ourselves. When the price is higher, we can sell the coffee and allow ourselves to get rich.
In 2023 Leonard contributed 952kg of coffee cherries to Migoti’s Migoti Hill lot. In 2022 he contributed 650kg, and in 2021 he contributed 180kg.
