Interview
What is your name?
Barasamaje Damien
How old are you?
I am 59 years old
How many children do you have?
11 children
How is living like in this area?
We live well.
When did you start farming coffee?
We started when we were 21 years old. Many years ago.
Why did you start farming coffee?
What made us think about starting cultivating coffee was that we were searching for well-being in our families. We saw that coffee was giving good production in comparison to other crops. So that is why we focused on the coffee.
How big is you land?
It is not small. The problem is that we have different small parts. The land is around 4 hectare in total.
How many coffee trees do you have?
In total we have 1200 coffee trees.
Which things in life bring you joy?
Happiness is just that we plant and harvest. And that the children can get something to eat.
What do you like about coffee farming?
With the money I got from the coffee plants, I was able to buy more land.
What are some of the main challenges you have in coffee farming?
The problems of getting grasses to put around the coffee trees. It is very difficult because it asks just me to pay workers who help me to put the grasses in the land, so to make sure the lands look well.
What are some things in life that changed since you started coffee farming?
Since I started to cultivate coffee, I can say that life went well. I am not desperate. I am always happy, but the price is still small. That is why I lose hope.
What are your hopes/dreams for the future?
My dreams are to make sure that things keep developing. That things develop in a better way than where I am currently. For instance, I bought lands, but I wish to get other things like transportation. However, I think I will not get it because of the price of coffee. The price of coffee is very small and I sometimes miss money to pay the workers on my land. What I can add is to ask the state to give us cows and get natural fertilizers to put in the coffee land.
In 2023 Damien contributed 2,632kg of coffee cherries to Migoti’s Masenga lot. In 2022 he contributed 5,106kg, and in 2021 he contributed 3,185kg.
What are the grasses referred to by coffee farmers?
During dry season, farmers cut and dry long grasses, which they then put around their trees for the purpose of mulching (covering land to reduce weeds and help soil retain moisture).
