Ndayishimiya Leonie
How old are you?
42 years old.
How many children do you have?
I have 6 children.
How is living like in this colline?
We live badly, you know how the current times are. But we live.
When did you start farming coffee?
When you ask me the time, I cannot answer, because I found the coffee planted. I live off the coffee now for 20 years.
Why did you start farming coffee?
We started because we saw that a coffee tree is a tree which would help us at anytime we wanted.
How big is you land?
It is not big, but God blessed us. Even though the land is small, we live by it.
How many coffee trees do you have?
More than 600 trees.
Which things in life bring you joy?
What makes us happy is only that when a person gets something to live from. We are happy when we live in peace. With peace a person is happy.
What do you like about coffee farming?
What we like about cultivating coffee is that it helps us in many things.
What are some of the main challenges you have in coffee farming?
The problems we face is that there are times we need chemicals to fertilize the soil and we miss money to buy grasses to put in the coffee lands. When harvesting, for instance this year, we didn’t harvest. This year we didn’t get enough production of coffee, but when the production is enough, we are very happy.
What are some things in life that changed since you started coffee farming?
When the coffee production is good, we are sometimes able to buy something from the income from the coffee trees.
What are your hopes/dreams for the future?
The hopes we have are that when we cultivate and have good production, we are able to buy things with the money and are able to achieve things.
What are the grasses referred to by coffee farmers?
During dry season, farmers cut and dry long grasses, which they then put around their trees for the purpose of mulching (covering land to reduce weeds and help soil retain moisture).
