Interview
What is your name?
NAHIMANA Gaspard
How old are you?
58 years old.
How many children do you have?
5 children. 2 boys, 3 girls.
Do you live on this mountain?
Yes, this house below is mine.
When did you start coffee farming?
I started coffee farming in 2015.
Why did you start coffee farming?
Our late president, whenever I watched him planting coffee I could admire that and I started doing that.
So the president was your model for doing this?
Yes, he was.
How big is your land?
This plantation contains 300 trees.
What do you like from farming coffee?
First of all, I like it because of the right income. And I like it because my father traded in coffee and got much money from it. But we uprooted the coffee trees my father owned.
What are some of the main challenges you have in coffee farming?
The first challenge we have is that of fertilizer, we never get enough of fertilizer. And sometimes we find ourselves doing things we don’t really understand. We do not always get people teaching us how it is done correctly and we find ourselves doing things we don’t understand.
Since you started coffee farming, did you see any change or improvement to the living conditions of your family?
There is a huge change in our family, because if you are going for your salary the first thing that hits your heart is joy. And you take care of the family needs. So you change your clothes and those of your children. Since I started coffee farming I even have a child who is in university. There is no problem that he is facing regarding school fees. So the money I get from the coffee helps a lot.
What are you hopes/dreams for the future about coffee farming?
I want to develop this coffee farming and one day I want to buy a very expensive car. Because I like coffee farming so much, that is why I am putting all my strength in it. Right know I have 3800 trees of coffee. I want to grow up to 5000.
In September, you are going to start new plantations?
Yes, I will. Because it is my goal and it is what I decided to do. And also I want to teach and train my children to like it and do the same thing I do.
Some of the plants we do, most young people do not do that so much. What about your children?
My children like the coffee trees, whenever I am laying down the grasses they come with me and they enjoy doing it. They like it very much.
How much harvest did you get last year?
This year I didn’t get much harvest. Last year, I harvest 700 kilograms of coffee. And my coffee was not grown yet, they were still baby trees. But I hope and see that next year I will get much more harvest.
What about this year, how much did you get?
This year I got 360 kilos. This year the harvest was not good. Coffee cannot produce twice a year.
In 2023 Gaspard contributed 259kg of coffee cherries to Migoti’s Kigina lot. In 2022 he contributed 652kg.
